Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnotherapy

What is Subliminal State Therapy in one sentence?

Work that resolves patterns (what we call the program) at the subconscious level, rather than managing them at the level of thought.

What is hypnosis, and what is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is the state: focused attention, narrowed peripheral awareness, and heightened responsiveness to suggestion. That’s a property of the state itself — even with zero suggestion given, someone in hypnosis is more suggestible than someone in ordinary waking consciousness. It can also happen with no one directing it at all: highway hypnosis, losing an hour in a book, that trance-like pull — all hypnosis, with no practitioner and no agenda.
Hypnotherapy is what happens when that heightened suggestibility gets used deliberately — a practitioner (or a script, or your own trained self-hypnosis) puts specific therapeutic suggestion into the state on purpose. The state makes the mind receptive; the suggestion is what actually does the changing. Hypnosis without suggestion is just a receptive, relaxed state — closer to what meditation is doing. Add the directed suggestion, and it becomes hypnotherapy.

Why do I know what’s wrong but still can’t change it?

Every experience teaches you something about how to stay safe. I don’t just mean physical safety. When we were young, safety was about belonging and staying in the approval of authority like parents, teachers etc…

Maybe you learned that speaking up leads to rejection or humiliation, that mistakes lead to shame, or that asking for help makes you a burden. Over time those lessons become automatic — they live below conscious awareness. So even when your logical mind says I know I should start the business or I know I should leave this relationship, another part of you feels fear, guilt, or shame instead.

You’re not lacking willpower. Your subconscious is protecting you from what it believes is danger. SST helps you find the experience where that protective belief first formed. Once it no longer feels necessary, the resistance disappears — you don’t force yourself forward, you simply stop feeling held back.

The Neuroscience of SST

For anyone who wants the fuller picture — this goes deeper than the answer above, and isn’t required reading to understand SST.
The brain continuously uses past experience to predict what is safe and what is threatening. Emotionally significant experiences create durable predictive associations between particular situations and threat responses — encoded in distributed neural networks, expressed through the autonomic nervous system.
Later, when a present-day situation resembles that earlier learning, the brain rapidly predicts danger before conscious reasoning fully engages. The autonomic nervous system generates physiological responses — anxiety, shame, fear, helplessness, tension — that bias behaviour toward avoidance.
The emotional response isn’t irrational. It’s the nervous system implementing a learned prediction.
SST seeks to identify the autobiographical memory in which this prediction was originally formed. By reprocessing that memory while the underlying network is active, the brain can update its prediction in light of new emotional information.
As the prediction changes, the autonomic response diminishes, allowing behaviour to become guided more by present circumstances than by past learning.

Why does this work faster than talk therapy?

SST works at the level where the trigger is held — before anger, fear, withdrawal, or hypervigilance becomes conscious. Talk therapy builds understanding and repair; SST goes directly to the sensitising event and the survival meaning still activating the trigger. Change can happen faster.

Watch an explanation

I’m already in therapy or coaching — is this worth trying alongside it?

If you’ve hit a block, yes. Coaching tools are genuinely helpful. But what stops you isn’t a lack of willpower — it’s the emotion produced by the subconscious program underneath. That’s a different address, not a replacement for the tools you already have.

Is this safe?

SST doesn’t impose commands. It reveals and rewrites what’s already within you, at your nervous system’s pace. You are conscious, and any energy work is done with your verbal permission.

What will I experience?

The work can go into places where you’re vulnerable — but your subconscious will only allow that if you’re ready to work through it. I ensure the safety of the experience, and guide you where it’s needed, so you can fully receive the resolution.
The subconscious speaks in symbols and images, not words — what appears to you takes the form of the meaning you attached to it. It holds everything you’ve lived, not only what you consciously remember.

What results can I expect?

You’ll feel calmer and clearer in situations that used to trigger you — not because you’ve learned to manage the trigger, but because the program underneath it changed. Many women also begin to balance out: not overly vigilant, not overly relaxed, just able to hold the tension between autonomy and belonging, structure and flow, receiving and sovereignty, without collapsing into either side.
Because the same root pattern usually shows up in more than one part of your life, resolving it at the source can shift several areas at once, not just the one you came in for. And because the belief itself changes, not just your ability to manage it, you won’t need to come back and work through the same one again.

Is this religious?

Short answer: No.

Long Answer:
Not in the sense of belonging to one religion — but it isn’t neutral either. SST works in alignment with what I call the Creator of all that is — the same intelligence many people call God, by whatever name fits for you, or none at all.
The symbolic imagery and energy work aren’t a religious framework laid on top of the process; they’re how the subconscious actually communicates, because it speaks in images and sensation, not logic.
If you follow a particular faith and want to bring your own understanding of God directly into the space, that’s not an accommodation; it’s part of how the work can hold you.
